Downsizing with COLORBOND® steel

With housing affordability in Australia a growing issue, one of the biggest trends we’re seeing is downsizing... not from house to apartment, but from big house to Tiny House. There’s a new movement called ‘Tiny Living’, which offers not only cost effective and simplified living solutions, but also the opportunity to create personal and financial freedom.

At the beginning of March, our Discovery Van was invited to the Tiny Homes Carnival at St Ives Showground on Sydney’s North Shore. These amazing little homes with roofs and walls made from COLORBOND® steel… it was like walking into Hobbiton on the set of Lord Of The Rings. We were lucky enough to meet Bryce Langston, host of 'Living Big In A Tiny House' - a YouTube show documenting the lives of people around the world who live in unique tiny homes.

These gorgeous little buildings provide affordability, flexibility in terms of a homeowner’s needs and all sorts of custom design options. Dimensions vary from around 5m to 8.5m in length with a regulated width of 2.5m and height of 4.3m. Each house is designed and can be upgraded with off grid options for electricity, water storage and more, encouraging a more conscious and sustainable lifestyle. Given that owning your own home in Australia has become an impossible dream for many, a Tiny House is a fantastic alternative. There are State and Local Council rules that depend on things like size and whether or not it’s on wheels, but you can build a complete Turn Key Tiny Home from around $60k. (And those roofs look spectacular.)

Inspirational ideas when you’re building or renovating

Building or renovating your home is an exciting time and we believe we can add to your enthusiasm by showing you some projects that may give you new and creative ideas for your own build. For example, check out a recently completed renovation by David Barbour - Co-Creator and Executive Producer of Channel 9's 'The Block'. David added a second storey onto his century-old home in Manly on Sydney’s northern beaches and as the property is located less than 250m from the ocean, materials had to be carefully selected. A self-confessed serial renovator himself, Mr Barbour was after a "modern beach feel" for the home and selected COLORBOND® Ultra steel in the colour Windspray® to complement the bluey-green exterior colour.

Saving injured Koalas on Kangaroo Island

In the wake of the devastating bushfires on Kangaroo Island earlier this year, Metroll South Australia generously supplied all the COLORBOND® steel roofing and fencing needed to rebuild the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park Koala Hospital and Koala enclosures after the original hospital was destroyed in the fires. Along with several other volunteers, ex-The Block stars Lysandra, Kerrie, Spence, El'ise and Matt along with Foreman Keith Schleiger spent a week re-building a new koala hospital. It was a mighty effort from everyone involved with some volunteers working onsite until 3am to get the job finished! Thanks again to Metroll SA and all our wonderful volunteers.

National Architecture Award for students
Every two years, the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) presents a student with a special honour. At the National Architecture Awards last year, the Glenn Murcutt Student Prize, sponsored by BlueScope, was presented to Sobi Slingsby of Griffith University for her project on Lady Elliot Island. Sobi’s scheme is a beautifully considered architectural response to the anticipated impact of climate change and sea-level rise on a coral cay at the southernmost tip of the Great Barrier Reef.

Thinking outside the Fence

Fencing is no longer just about securing and marking boundaries. It provides a focal point of an owner’s street frontage and integrates seamlessly with landscape design. And it’s also a popular application for COLORBOND® steel. So if you’re looking for the perfect fence as part of your building or renovation project – something man-made that complements the natural surrounds – check out this design by Northern Rivers Fencing at Lennox Head, on the North Coast of NSW for some ideas that may inspire you.

Choose a frame with the inner strength of TRUECORE® steel

The key to a beautifully finished home is the way it starts… so says Tom Williams in a video he made recently for BlueScope®. TRUECORE® steel is the product we recommend you use as the frame for your new home… and for many reasons. Apart from its inner strength and durability, a frame made from TRUECORE® steel is straight and precise and won’t twist or warp over time. It’s also 100% resistant to termites and borers and is ideal if you happen to live in an area prone to bushfires as it won’t catch fire.
