COLORBOND® steel cool roofing solutions

Dear [firstname,fallback=],

As the world rises to meet the challenges of a changing climate, energy conservation and decarbonisation, technology continues to re-shape the way our urban environments are designed, built and managed.

BlueScope is committed to an ongoing program of collaboration, research and development to bring industry-leading innovation to COLORBOND® steel products. COLORBOND® steel cool roofing colours can help to address environmental issues such as Urban Heat Islands.

We have put together a range of cool roofing resources including brochures, articles, projects and COLORBOND® steel cool roofing colours featuring low Solar Absorptance (SA) values of less than or equal to 0.45.

New Environmental Product Declarations available

We have recently published new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for the following products:

  • COLORBOND® Coolmax® steel at base metal thicknesses (BMTs) of 0.42mm, 0.48mm and 0.55mm
  • ZINCALUME® steel at certain BMTs ranging from 0.30 to 1.20mm
  • TRUECORE® steel at certain BMTs ranging from 0.42 to 1.60mm
  • DECKFORM® steel and Low Glare DECKFORM® steel at certain BMTs ranging from 0.60 to 1.50mm

Rollforming - additional information
For a number of products including COLORBOND® steel for roofing and walling, COLORBOND® Coolmax® steel, ZINCALUME® steel and TRUECORE® steel, our EPDs now include information about the rollforming process, to provide indicative results for the final formed product.1 This further information supports customers by providing more detail relevant to the products specified/purchased, aligned with industry demand for greater transparency.

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent data and other relevant information about the life cycle and environmental impacts of a product, including global warming potential.

BlueScope EPDs can be used to support life cycle assessments including embodied/upfront carbon, for end uses such as buildings, infrastructure and their components, as well as everyday materials, and can contribute points to rating tools such as Green Star and IS Rating.

1 The rollforming results may not be representative of the final formed product from any particular rollforming operation, company or site. Please refer to the relevant EPD for further detail.

GreenTagCertTM GreenRate re-certification

BlueScope’s Welded Beams and Columns, XLERPLATE® steel and COLORBOND® steel for roofing and walling (XRW) at BMTs of 0.42 and 0.48mm have been re-certified under the Global GreenTagCertTM GreenRate certification, maintaining the highest rating, 'Level A'. In addition, a further number of BMTs for COLORBOND® steel for roofing and walling have been certified, also achieving 'Level A'.

GreenRate is a robust and comprehensive third-party verified eco-labelling program aligned with the ISO 14024 standard for environmental labels and declarations. Specifying products with GreenRate can contribute points to rating tools such as Green Star and IS Rating.

All three BlueScope products with GreenRate 'Level A' certification, in conjunction with their respective EPDs, are recognised as 'Best Practice' products under the new Green Star Responsible Products Framework.

Green Star Responsible Products Framework - BlueScope products

The new Green Star Responsible Products Framework (RPF) recognises products made from steel manufactured at ResponsibleSteel certified sites, as 'Good Practice' products. With Port Kembla Steelworks achieving certification to the ResponsibleSteel Standard Version 1.1 in 2022, all BlueScope products manufactured from steel produced at Port Kembla Steelworks are considered 'Good Practice' products.

  • 'Good practice' products under the RPF include, amongst others: COLORBOND® Coolmax® steel, ZINCALUME® steel, DECKFORM® steel, TRUECORE® steel, GALVASPAN® steel, GALVABOND® steel and REDCOR® weathering steel.
  • Products with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and GreenRate 'Level A' certification are considered 'best practice' products under the RPF.
  • 'Best practice' products under the RPF include: COLORBOND® steel for roofing and walling (XRW) in select BMTs, XLERPLATE® steel and Welded beams and columns.
